Non-executives are a luxury few people know how to use properly

NON-executive directors (NEDs) are like bidets - quite a few people fancy having one but many don't know how to use them properly - according to Jo Haigh of business advisory firm ATF.

Her comments come on the back of a report commissioned by Sheffield-based MGR - the accounting division of Atf - and Leeds-based hlw McCombie Commercial Lawyers, which showed that business people are more likely to consult their husband/wife or partner for business advice than their NED.

More than 15% of people opted for personal partners as their top choice for advice compared to 13% for a NED.

The report found that the most popular choice for advice remained the company's accountant with more than a third of respondents saying they would be most likely to consult them.
